Is Online Learning as Good as Face-to-Face Learning

Understanding and interpretation of the effectiveness of online and face-to-face learning are very different, and we will rely on the amount and totality of knowledge and skills that students gain during classes.

According to this indicator, online (distance) learning is in the lead. The secret of this approach is the ability to create a flexible and individual program for each student. In a traditional school that provides face-to-face learning, in the classroom, this is impossible. Even homework is evaluated and checked in a fairly uniform manner. When working remotely with students, much more productive communication is built: consultations on all emerging issues, assistance in working on a complex topic, additional information in the chosen area, etc.

In addition, the face-to-face learning school is quite “traditional”, many innovations are perceived negatively by the administration and inspection bodies. At the same time, the modern school curriculum is severely criticized as outdated and insufficient even for admission to a domestic university. Distance (online) learning of students from the very beginning involves a more flexible approach, can include a much larger amount of material. The meaning of “working time” and “school hours”, on the basis of which teachers’ salaries are calculated in a traditional school, has been significantly revised here. All these help to give the student on the distance form more, to help better understand the whole program, to demonstrate the best results at any level.

The most “strong” side, according to some experts, of the traditional school – is the socialization of the student. In other words, it is the school environment where they acquire the necessary communication skills, they are instilled with cultural norms, they learn to behave in a team. It is believed that in the remote form the student is completely deprived of it. However, this is not the case, let’s look at modern students.

Are you satisfied with the way the school performs its educational functions? What norms and skills of behavior in the team are brought up within the walls of educational institutions? In most cases, all the same, experts openly criticize domestic schools for performing these functions. The distance school increases the role of parents, sections, and circles in the formation of values and norms of the student give the opportunity to “filter” useless or even harmful cultural information.

Circle of communication. Do many modern students communicate online? If they suddenly stop attending school in person, will it take them away from social networks, chats, and other forms of modern communication? Will they stop talking to friends in sports sections or clubs? This approach could have been relevant twenty years ago, but today everything has changed. No matter what and how your student attends, he will be able to connect with friends and comrades even without leaving home. You can criticize this state of affairs, under the influence of nostalgia for your own experience, but this is an established and objective fact.

Thus, there is only a theoretical advantage of traditional schools in the field of socialization. Online learning wins the benefit in modern settings.
